  • What is Acupuncture?Open or Close

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most common, and dependable medical therapies in the world. It is by nature simple, safe, and effective. Acupuncturists use thin, solid, sterile disposable needles inserted into specific areas of the body to help re-balance the internal environment, re-establish homeostasis, and thus treat disease. According to traditional theories acupuncture influences the vital force, or Qi of the body. Western science has proven that acupuncture can regulate the body by many mechanisms, including stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems.

In the US, acupuncture is usually associated with pain management, as it has been recognized as being very effective at treating all types of acute and chronic pain. However, acupuncture can also be used to treat a very wide range of medical conditions including infertility, gynecological concerns, digestive disorders, respiratory complaints, insomnia, fatigue, and psychological issues such as anxiety and depression.

Over the three decades in which acupuncture has evolved in the U.S., it has been proven in an increasing body of scientific studies to not only be exceptionally safe when performed by licensed acupuncturists, but statistically effective.

    Does it hurt?

The experience of acupuncture varies for each person. There may be an initial sensation during the insertion of the needles. While the needles are in, some sensations include: dullness, heaviness, movement, mild itching, along with feelings of relaxation and calmness.

    What to expect?

At the first session we will first briefly discuss your medical history, access health and emotional concerns. We will use diagnostic tools including palpation of the pulse along with tongue observation.

What does the needle feel like?

The acupuncture needle is very thin, in fact just slightly thicker than the human hair. Typically the insertion of a needle is painless, in some cases you may not even know a needle has been inserted. In other cases, there may be some heaviness, tingling, warmth, itching, and the feeling of movement around the insertion site. Most people find acupuncture relaxing and frequently fall asleep during the treatment. Most treatments can be done without undressing provided the patient is wearing comfortable clothing.

    How many treatments are needed?

This depends on the nature, length, and severity of your complaint. Generally, patients begin to feel an emotional and physical shift after 3-4 treatments.

Our office is conveniently located at 2005 Palmer Avenue, in Larchmont, NY 10538

In acupuncture and Chinese medicine, we believe in treating the individual, not just treating the symptom(s). Every individual comes with a unique pattern of symptoms and health issues that demand a targeted holistic approach to treatment. Thus it is necessary to gather as much information about the individual to create a customized diagnosis and treatment plan at the outset.

When you arrive for your first appointment you will be asked to fill out a detailed Health History and Initial Intake form, as well as, review and sign our Informed Consent/Notice of Privacy form. It is best you arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill these out.

A typical assessment typically involves the practitioner reviewing your Health History form, asking some questions, taking your pulse, observing your tongue and perhaps palpating specific channels and or points that will help identify the correct pattern and the best approach for treatment. This is the time when you would ask any questions that you have as well.

Right before the treatment begins we will ask that you:

    • Remove your shoes and socks.
    • Roll up your pant legs and shirt-sleeves as necessary.
    • Remove watches or anything that might interfere with us taking your pulse at your wrists.
    • Make yourself comfortable and the practitioner will be with you as soon as possible.

From here on out, your job is to kick back and enjoy a good rest. A typical treatment will last from 30-40 minutes. When you’re finished with your treatment, you can exit through reception where you can purchase further treatments and book your next appointment before you continue on with your day.

    • Dear Anabelle,
I want to thank you and express my gratitude for your service. Your treatments help me tremendously with the pain and discomfort I experience from my pessary, which my doctor installed to help me with my bladder prolapse. I notice a huge a difference with the weekly acupuncture treatments you give, I have less urge to urinate, and I feel less pelvic pressure. Your service is invaluable and has helped me to resume living a normal life, and enjoy playing with my grandchildren. I have recommended you to all my friends.

      ~ Mrs. M ~
    • Dear Anabelle,
As you know I have been a migraine sufferer for over 15 years and it has truly ruined my life. I have had to lock myself in my bedroom in the dark, where I have had to battle excruciating pain and nausea that would last for days. Since coming to your office for acupuncture, the migraines have become less frequent and last a shorter time. For the first time I feel hope, I pray with continued treatments they might stop. You are a very caring person and have a gentle touch. The treatments are very relaxing, and you have a very sweet voice. I thank you very much for helping me.

      ~ Mrs. J ~
    • Dear Anabelle,
You are amazing! I can finally sleep! I have been battling insomnia for years as a result of my prescribed medication, prednisone that I can not live without. Rather than having to continue experimentation with various prescription sleep medication, I feel so relieved that there is one less pill that I need to take. You have helped me to sleep through the night with no problems. I have also noticed that I don't get colds as frequently since becoming your client. Another benefit from this great medicine. Thank you for doing what you do. Looking forward to the next treatment.

      ~ Mrs. L ~
